Yann Freichels (°1996 Grüfflingen, Belgium) is among the most exceptional young talents to come out of Belgium's Eastern Cantons.

Freichels works and lives in Grüfflingen, Belgium, a small village which is close to Eupen. He completed his education in painting at the “École supérieure des arts de la ville de Liège” (ESAVL) in 2020. His analysis of early 20th-century German painting history is sardonic and humorous and is reminiscent of Otto Dix and George Grosz, two painters of the New Objectivity movement although Martin Kippenberger and Luc Tuymans are an inspiration because

of their political commitment. Being German-speaking but Belgian, has the advantage of allowing him to paint a wide range of subjects; in particular, his paintings effectively illustrate the role the Eastern Cantons play as intermediaries between the French- and German-speaking cultural worlds; the region south of Eupen is on the traditional border of Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgian French-speaking

territory. His work, which demonstrates excellent literary and historical knowledge, heavily draws on the violent past of national socialism.

Yann Freichels (°1996 Grü2lingen, België) behoort tot de meest uitzonderlijke jonge talenten uit de Belgische Oostkantons.

Freichels werkt en woont in Grü2lingen, België, een klein dorpje vlakbij Eupen. Hij voltooide zijn opleiding schilderkunst aan de “École supérieure des arts de la ville de Liège” (ESAVL) in 2020. Zijn analyse van de vroeg 20e-eeuwse Duitse schildergeschiedenis is sardonisch en humoristisch en doet denken aan Otto Dix en George Grosz, twee schilders van de New Objectivity-beweging, hoewel Martin Kippenberger en Luc Tuymans eveneens een inspiratiebron zijn vanwege hun politieke engagement. Omdat hij Duitstalig maar Belg is, heeft hij het voordeel dat hij een breed scala aan onderwerpen kan schilderen; zijn schilderijen illustreren met name op efectieve wijze de rol die de Oostkantons spelen als intermediairs tussen de Franstalige en Duitstalige culturele werelden; de regio ten zuiden van Eupen ligt op de traditionele grens van Duitsland, Luxemburg, Nederland en Belgisch Franstalig gebied.

Zijn werk, dat getuigt van een uitstekende literaire en historische kennis, leunt op het gewelddadige verleden van het nationaalsocialisme.
